William Steinitz (1836-1900) has been called the father of modern chess. He developed many objective principles of chess play, putting chess strategy, for the first time, on a solid theoretical base. Reigning for twenty-eight years as the world's foremost chess master, he, in Reinfeld's words, "was the most original thinker, the most courageous player, and the most remarkable personality in the fifteen centuries or so that the game has been in existence." This book tells Steinitz's story, his biography, his achievements, and presents and selection of seventy-odd representative games, with full move lists and comments. Republication of original work "A Memorial to William Steinitz" published 1901 by G. P. Putnam and Sons, with some additions and corrections.
