Smyslov first attempted the supreme title in the 1948 tournament, where he finished second to Botvinnik. Eventually, after two victories in the candidates' competitions and a draw with Botvinnik, Smyslov defeated his great and eternal rival to become world champion in 1957, when he was still only 35 years old.
